What Is A Rhinoplasty And What Does Undergoing One Involve? Rhinoplasty in Lisle Il is a surgical procedure done on the nose. It is better known as a “nose job.” The doctor can change the size and shape of the patient’s nose in order to make it more proportionate with the rest of their face. A rhinoplasty is often cosmetic, but it can also be functional, in which case it is being done to correct a problem with the nose that is impairing the patient’s ability to breathe through it.
What Is the Difference between an Open Rhinoplasty and a Closed Rhinoplasty?
In an open rhinoplasty, the surgeon will make an incision across the columella, which is the strip of cartilage between the nostrils. They will then peel back the skin to access the surgery site. In a closed rhinoplasty, which is the newer technique, the surgeon will make all of their incisions inside the nose.
The surgeon will select a method depending on what is being done.
Will the Patient Need Anesthesia?
Yes. Most patients are given IV sedation, so they will sleep through the procedure. IV sedation has the advantage of allowing the patient to breathe on their own, while a patient given general anesthesia would need to be hooked up to a machine that would breathe for them.
What Is the Recovery Like?
The patient will wear a splint on the exterior of their nose for up to a week. If the patient underwent an open rhinoplasty, the doctor will remove the stitches at around the same as they remove the splint.
The patient may experience bruising and swelling for the first week or two after surgery, but they can reduce such effects by keeping their head elevated. Most patients can return to work about seven to ten days after the surgery.
It will take six to twelve months for the nose to reach its permanent shape.
