In the United States, over 3 million people annually seek help for drug abuse. Many of them agree to detox as part of a proper program. In Broward County, the hope is that such measures will not only “dry” them out temporarily, but also lead to a more permanent drug-free existence. However, this is not always the case. The success rate depends upon the program. This includes the specific method of detoxification it may use.

What Is Detox?

Detoxification (detox) is the means of decreasing or even removing both the actual use of the addictive substance and its physical presence. Different possibilities for accomplishing this exist. The common types are:

  • Medical
  • Non-medical
  • Rapid

A patient can undergo any of these treatments as an outpatient or in a residential or patient environment or treatment facility. The latter tends to prove to be more effective.

Medical

Whether you live in Broward County or elsewhere in the United States or North America, your physician may decide the best way to cleanse your body from the drugs is through medical detox. This utilizes various medications, including buprenorphine to help the patient escape the worse symptoms of drug withdrawal. Some clinics or programs administer the medication through an IV. This allows them to monitor the condition of the patient as he or she reacts to the removing of the drug from his or her body.

Non-Medical

This involves letting the patient go through withdraw without any assistance from medication. Some programs use meditation; others employ nothing at all. Medical professionals do not recommend either type as the sole support for handling withdrawal.

Detox

If you are hooked on a drug – prescription or street, you need to seek help. In many programs, the process begins with detoxification. While detox is not enough to successfully “cure” you, it is the first major step to recovery for many drug addicts in many Broward County clinics.
